Description
Globular Sea Urchin
Globular Sea Urchin Mespilia globulus are a striking and highly beneficial addition to many marine aquariums, well known for their vibrant appearance and impressive algae-grazing abilities. Their rounded body and vivid blue coloration make them a standout feature in reef tanks, while their constant grazing helps to naturally control nuisance algae growth on rocks and aquarium surfaces.
These fascinating invertebrates are constantly on the move, using their tube feet and spines to carefully navigate around the aquarium in search of algae and organic matter to feed on. As active grazers, Globular Sea Urchins can be extremely useful in established marine systems where algae management is important, particularly in reef aquariums with mature live rock structures.
Globular Sea Urchins are generally considered reef safe and can usually be kept alongside corals, fish, and other peaceful invertebrates without issue. However, as with many urchin species, they may occasionally move loose frags, unsecured coral pieces, or decorations while travelling around the aquarium, so ensuring rockwork and corals are stable is recommended.
Due to their continuous appetite for algae, these urchins are best suited to mature aquariums with a well-established natural food supply. In systems with limited algae growth, supplemental feeding may be required using dried seaweed, algae wafers, or herbivore foods to ensure long-term health. Stable water parameters are also important, as sea urchins can be sensitive to sudden changes in salinity, pH, and water quality.
Globular Sea Urchins are peaceful animals that spend most of their time grazing and exploring the aquarium. Their unique movement and unusual appearance make them a favourite amongst reef keepers looking to add both functionality and visual interest to their marine setup.
As with all marine invertebrates, careful acclimation is recommended when introducing Globular Sea Urchins to a new aquarium. Slow acclimation to salinity and temperature will help reduce stress and improve long-term success.
This species is strictly for marine aquariums and must not be kept in freshwater (tropical or coldwater) or terrestrial environments, as they require stable saltwater conditions to survive.
