Gardneri Killifish are found in a wide range of habitats with as many geographical colour forms. They are one of the most hardy killifish and a great starter fish for anyone wanting to get into killifish keeping. Best kept in a species only set up, the aquarium should be spacious and heavily planted. Ideally several females should be kept for every male and if several males are kept in the same aquarium, there should be a lot of visual barriers and hiding places as they tend to spar a lot.
These fish are not suitable for communities, but some species can be kept with them, such as Rainbow Kribs. This allows the killifish to live in peace near the top of the aquarium and the Kribs will stay at the bottom as is natural for them both. If the killifish is added to the community, it must be monitored carefully as they can be very shy during feeding times and may not get their share of the food.
