The mighty Congo Tetra is one of the few african tetra available in the hobby and the largest tetra of them all, making them suitable for aquariums with larger peaceful cichlids and other fish that would otherwise eat the smaller tetra. They are often overlooked in shops as they may appear quite drab at first glance, but once settled in a home aquarium, the iridescent strips of blue and orange make them stand out in any home aquarium. Though they can adapt to a variety of conditions, they should be kept in soft acidic water in the long term.
Congos need a large tank of at least 4ft long. They tank should be planted to give these nervous fish some cover to escae to if they feel the need. The flow should be steady and the water well oxygenated. As they are a shoaling species, it is best to keep them in groups of 6 or more individuals as it will help them feel more secure. Ideal tank mates include other larger tetra, peaceful barbs, Corydoras, Angelfish, Rainbowfish and even larger semi-peaceful cichlids like Uaru and Severums among others. Avoid any fin nipping fish as they will damage the beautiful flowing fins of the congos.
Food can be offered in the form of tropical pellets as well as fresh and frozen fish foods. These fish are not particularly fussy.
