Chocolate Chip Starfish – Protoreaster nodosus

Chocolate Chip Starfish, Protoreaster nodosus, is a striking and unusual marine invertebrate that makes a fascinating addition to the right saltwater aquarium. Best known for the dark raised nodules across its body that resemble chocolate chips, this species is a popular choice for customers looking for something eye catching and a little different from more traditional marine clean up crew members. Although hardy once established, Chocolate Chip Starfish are best suited to mature marine aquariums with stable water conditions and plenty of space to move across the substrate and rockwork. They are often kept in fish only or FOWLR systems, where they can be appreciated as a centrepiece invertebrate without the risk they pose to corals and other sessile tank mates. Unlike reef safe stars and snails, this species is not suitable for reef aquariums, as it may feed on corals, sponges, tube worms, clams and other small invertebrates. In the aquarium they will scavenge and can also be offered a varied diet of suitable meaty marine foods such as chopped shrimp, mussel, squid and other prepared foods to help ensure long term health. Chocolate Chip Starfish are peaceful with fish but should only be housed with non aggressive tank mates that will not nip at or harass them. As with all echinoderms, they are sensitive to sudden changes in salinity and water chemistry, so careful acclimation and a well maintained marine set up are essential.

This species is strictly for marine aquariums and must not be kept in freshwater (tropical or coldwater) or terrestrial environments, as they will not survive outside of saltwater conditions.
