The Buenos Aires Tetra was once one of the most popular species in the hobby. They are one of the larger tetras, but nonetheless peaceful. As a shoaling species, they should be kept in a group of 6 or more specimens. These fish are able to adapt to a huge range of conditions, including temperate aquariums and tend to be one of the most forgiving fish you could own.
The aquarium should be spacious with plenty of open space for these fast and very active fish to utilise. Plants are best avoided as they are likely to be nipped relentlessly, but certain robust species like Anubias may be left alone. These tetras will make an excellent addition to larger fish communities, especially South American. They will do well alongside some of the small and mid sized cichlids like Severums, Geophagus, Firemouths and Parrots. Avoid any fish with longer fins as the Buenos Aires is known for being a little nippy with them.
Food can be offered in the form of pellets, flakes and fresh or frozen fish foods.
