The Banded Leporinus is a very large characin with a very wide distribution throughout South America. They are a member of the headstander family and are often found in large shoals in the wild in areas of stronger water movement.
The aquarium must be very large as this fish will grow to an incredible size. The aquarium should be large from the outset as the fish will grow very fast and may become stunted if there isn't enough space. An open swimming area is necessary, but the adition of bogwood and rocks is also welcome. This fish is a notorious plant muncher, so choose plants accordingly, aiming for robust species like anubias or by simply opting for silk plants instead. Filtration needs to be efficient and flow should be decent with plenty of oxygenation. A lid is essential as these fish are known for jumping.
Though they are a shoaling species, in an enclosed environment they can get quite difficult to manage as they can squabble a lot when kept in small groups. Best practice to either keep one on its own or a very large group of 10 or more specimens to help spread out the aggression. Tank mates should be chosen with care as small species may be eaten and some mild mannered species may be spooked by this very active fish. Ideal tank mates include some of the larger Cichlids, Catfish and other larger species of characins.
Food can be offered in the form of pellets, as well as fresh or frozen fish foods such as mysis, brine shrimp and krill.
