Hammers are a perennial favourite for reef keepers, adding both colour and movement to the aquarium. They are not a particularly fussy coral (for LPS), but very much need an established set up with stable water chemistry. They are moderately easy to keep, but not beginner friendly. A strong understanding of salinity, pH and regular testing of minor elements is a must. Sudden changes in water parameters can be detrimental to this coral.

Like any LPS coral, the quality of your light and water plays a key role in successfully keeping hammers. The flow should be moderate and strong enough to not allow debris to settle on the coral, but not so strong as to cause it to retract or get damaged. Lighting should also be kept moderate. Bright lighting can lead to bleaching, but low lighting can cause difficulty with extension

This coral has a symbiotic relationship with zooxanthellae, a type of algae. For this reason, it’s best to ensure that there’s plenty of coral foods such as phytoplankton and amino acids to keep them healthy. Additional feeding of meaty foods such as brine shrimp is also recommended 1-3 times per week.

Ample space should be provided for this species of coral as they are aggressive and will send out long sweepers to attack nearby corals. They can be kept among their own species and some other euphillias, but torches should be kept further away.
