Anubias Bonzai Pot Aquarium Plant
Anubias Bonzai is a small Anubias, a hardy plant with compact dark green leaves. It's a great plant for beginners that needs little maintenance and is suitable for smaller aquariums. It is best planted in shaded spots to restrict algae growth on the leaves. Bonzai has particularly small leaves and is therefore better suited to smaller aquaria than the traditional varieties like Barteri.
In nature these aquarium plants don't grow submerged, but will live quite happily under water in the aquarium. Lighting is not particularly important as anubias will grow just as well in the shade. This is a slow growing plant and spreads through extensions of the rhizome. Anubias flower occasionally, producing stems of small white flowers that look very similar to peace lilies.
To plant, it is best to remove the pot and the rockwool from the plant as they are of no benefit. Anubias Bonzai are epiphytes and need to be affixed to rocks or wood with aquarium glue. Planting these plants in the substrate is not appreciated by them and can lead to rotting and poor growth. Epiphytes feed directly from the water column, so this plant is a very efficient way to drain the nutrients in the water and discourage algae from growing. Additional feeding with liquid fertiliser will ensure that all the micro nutrients are available for a healthy plant.
