Description

Feather Duster Worm, Sabellastarte sp, is a beautiful and unusual marine invertebrate that brings movement and elegance to a reef or marine aquarium. Best known for its delicate fan of feather like radioles, this species is a popular choice for customers looking to add something eye catching and a little different to their tank, whilst also benefiting from a peaceful filter feeding invertebrate. When settled and comfortable, Feather Duster Worms will extend their crown into the water to capture tiny suspended food particles, quickly retracting back into their tube if disturbed. They are best kept in a mature marine aquarium with stable water conditions, gentle to moderate flow and a suitable position in the rockwork or substrate where they can remain secure. Unlike many more active clean up crew species, Feather Duster Worms do not graze algae or scavenge larger food items, so they rely on regular feeding with suitable phytoplankton, zooplankton or specialist filter feeder foods, particularly in ultra clean systems where natural suspended food may be limited. This species is generally regarded as reef safe and can make an excellent addition to peaceful reef aquariums, provided it is not kept with fish or invertebrates that may pick at the crown or disturb the tube. As with many marine invertebrates, Feather Duster Worms can be sensitive to poor water quality and sudden changes in salinity or chemistry, so careful acclimation and a stable, well maintained aquarium are important for long term success.

This species is strictly for marine aquariums and must not be kept in freshwater (tropical or coldwater) or terrestrial environments, as they will not survive outside of saltwater conditions.
