Frozen Mice are one of the most commonly used whole-prey foods for snakes and other suitable carnivorous reptiles. Available in sizes ranging from Pinkies through to Extra Large mice, they provide a convenient way to select appropriately sized prey as your animal grows.

Whole mice provide muscle, organs, bone and other tissues within a single prey item and are widely used as a staple food for many commonly kept snake species.

They can also form part of an appropriate varied diet for some larger carnivorous reptiles and exotic animals, including certain monitors and tegus.

Choosing the Right Size Frozen Mouse

Choosing an appropriately sized prey item is more important than simply feeding the largest mouse an animal is capable of swallowing.

Feeding Frozen Mice

Frozen mice should always be completely defrosted before feeding.

Only thaw the number required for each feeding and follow good hygiene practices when handling raw frozen prey. Wash your hands and clean surfaces or equipment that have come into contact with the mouse.

Remove uneaten prey promptly and do not refreeze once fully defrosted.

More Than Just Snake Food

Although most commonly associated with snakes, appropriately sized frozen mice can also be offered to some other carnivorous reptiles and exotic animals.

Certain monitor lizards and tegus, for example, may take whole rodents as part of a varied diet. Their suitability and feeding frequency will depend upon the individual species, so mice shouldn’t automatically be considered a staple food for every carnivorous reptile.

Not every snake needs to move onto rats. However, for species that become too large for appropriately sized mice, rats can provide a more practical larger prey item.
