The Yellowhead Butterflyfish is a more difficult species native to the Indian Ocean. Like all butterflies, they demand excellent water conditions and areas of filamentous algae growth is highly recommended. Water needs to be well filtered and highly oxygenated with areas of strong current as well as some resting spots among the live rock. They can’t be kept with any Stony Corals and other sessile invertebrates, but some aquarists have enjoyed success with some of the more noxious soft corals.
This fish should not be kept with others of its own kind or any other butterfly species as they are territorial and will most likely fight over space. Beyond that they are quite a peaceful species. They can be very shy when first introduced to the aquarium and will hide among the live rock, but it doesn’t take long for them to gain confidence and come out into the open.
