Wreck Fish or Lyretail Anthias are a social species that like to live in large shoals in the wild. The males tend to be very territorial, so typically one male will have a harem of many females. In the aquarium this should be replicated, but if a male can’t be obtained, then an all female group will suffice as the dominant female will become male in the absence of a male. The group must be of 8-10 individuals in order to spread out the aggression. If there are too few, the lowest ranking fish is likely to be bullied persistently. However, if the aquarium can’t accommodate a large group, then a single specimen would be advisable. This is quite a boisterous species and should not be housed with mild mannered fish that are easily intimidated or outcompeted for food. Direct food competitors should be avoided as this fish may bully or chase them. Equally, large aggressive species may frighten this fish and prevent it from being able to feed.
