Water Soldier Floating Plant
Price range: £3.95 through £17.50
Description
Water Soldier (Stratiotes aloides)
The water soldier is a fascinating native British aquatic plant that offers both striking aesthetics and real ecological value. Its bold, semi-submerged rosettes of serrated, sword-like leaves rise dramatically above the waterline in summer, creating a prehistoric, architectural look that instantly draws the eye.
Uniquely self-regulating, water soldiers spend most of the year submerged, rising to the surface in late spring to flower and bask in the sun before sinking again in autumn — making them one of the most interesting and low-maintenance plants you can add to a wildlife pond.
Key Features:
- Produces delicate white three-petalled flowers in early summer
- Naturally oxygenates and filters pond water
- Exceptional habitat for pond wildlife, including newts, frogs, and invertebrates
- Truly native species — ideal for wildlife and conservation ponds
- Free-floating — no planting required
- Spreads naturally via runners, gradually colonising open water
Best For: Wildlife ponds, native planting schemes, and larger garden ponds with open water.
Available to buy from April to September.
