The Snowflake Eel has a wide range of habitats, but is most commonly found in shallower waters where it forages mostly at night for crustaceans and smaller fish. It is a surprisingly mild mannered fish, except for feeding times when it becomes somewhat frenzied. The aquarium should be spacious with soft sand and a lot of rock work with gaps for the snowflake to occupy. The aquarium must have a tight fitting lid as these fish are well known for their escapes. Filtration needs to be very efficient due to the diet of this fish and the sheer volume of food it consumes. Areas of decent flow as well as gentle resting spots are also required.
Tank mates should be too big to eat and several snowflakes can be housed together as long as the aquarium is large enough and they're all introduced at the same time. Any that are added later are unlikely to be accepted. This fish is not considered reef safe as it feeds on crustaceans and a range of invertebrates whilst also having the potential to dislodge any corals that aren't fixed down firmly. It does not however eat corals.
