The Snakeskin Barb is quite a rare delicate species from Indonesia. It is a shy species that requires soft, acidic conditions and a peaceful, shady tank. Excellent water quality is essential as this fish can be very sensitive to poor water conditions and can quickly develop velvet or white spot as a result. The aquarium should be well planted and furnished with bog wood and rocks.
Snakeskin Barbs are quite peaceful, but sometimes squabble amongst themselves. This is normal behaviour and doesn't tend to lead to any damage. 10 or more specimens will make up a good shoal and the squabbling should be more spread out then instead of any single fish being targeted regularly. The aquarium should be at least 70L with an open swimming space in the middle. The addition of rocks and wood will make for great hiding places and things to explore. Plants can be used to provide additional cover, but avoid any fine leaved plants as these fish do like to nibble them sometimes. They will live happily with a plethora of different community fish, but large, belligerent species such as cichlids should be avoided as the Rubies are easily intimidated. Long finned species should also be avoided due to potential nipping.
Food can be offered in the form of pellets and fresh or frozen fish foods such as mysis, brine shrimp, blood worm and daphnia.
