The Silvertip Tetra is one of the less well known species of Tetra. In shops they are often overlooked as they may appear quite drab, but they have their own individual charm once they’ve coloured up into an almost translucent body with accents of gold. Unlike most Tetras, the males and females are quite easily distinguished by the intensity of their colour. These fish are able to adapt to a very wide range of conditions as long as the parameters aren’t in the extremes.

The aquarium should be spacious and planted with plenty of open swimming space for the fish to utilise. We recommend a dark background to really bring the fish to prominence.

Silvertips are one of the best shoalers in the hobby, so it is best to have them in larger groups of 10 or more specimens. They are however one of the feistier tetras and can be a little nippy, so it’s best to avoid keeping them with long finned species.

Ideal tank mates include other Tetras, Angelfish, Barbs, Peaceful Cichlids, Rainbowfish, Catfish and Loaches. Avoid any of the larger Cichlids as they may view the Silvertips as food.

Food can be offered in the form of micropellets, flakes and fresh or frozen fish foods such as Daphnia and Brine Shrimp.

Please note that the fish you are buying are still juveniles and have yet to colour up. Offering a healthy environment and good quality high protein food will help bring them into full colour.
