Saururus cernuus, commonly known as lizard’s tail, is a striking native wetland perennial prized for its heart-shaped green leaves and graceful, nodding spikes of tiny white flowers. Naturally suited to pond margins, rain gardens, boggy borders, and consistently moist soils, it brings texture, movement, and a fresh citrus-like fragrance to waterwise plantings. This rhizomatous grower forms lush colonies over time, making it an excellent choice for naturalized landscapes, habitat gardens, and shaded or partially sunny damp areas. 

Care Instructions 

Grow Saururus cernuus in full sun to partial shade in rich, consistently moist to wet soil, or place it at the edge of a pond in shallow water. It performs best in bog gardens, rain gardens, and other damp locations, and is hardy in a wide range of temperate climates. Keep the soil from drying out, especially during warm weather, and divide clumps as needed to manage its spreading rhizomes. Little routine maintenance is required beyond removing tired foliage and containing growth where space is limited.
