The Red Tiger Cichlid is a large aggressive Central American species. It resembles a Jaguar Cichlid as a juvenile, but as adults they will colour up into hues of reds and yellows. Like most Central American Cichlids, they are a fairly aggressive species that is exclusively carnivorous. As a result, this fish will see everything that fits in its mouth as food and so tank mates should be chosen carefully. It is also a territorially aggressive Cichlid towards both conspecifics and nonspecifics, but can handle itself among other large aggressive species. The Aquarium needs to be very large as this fish grows to a substantial size.
Tank mates can be added, but they must be large enough to not be viewed as food and robust enough to be able to defend themselves or not be considered weak. Other robust central american cichlids make good tank mates, but Larger synodontis catfish, Pictus Catfish and Large Plecos like Adonis and Gibbiceps are also good choices. These fish are however not suited to a tropical community whatsoever.
Food can be offered in the form of Sinking Carnivore Pellets and meaty foods like Mysis, Krill, Mussels, Cockle. Chopped Prawns and Lancefish. These Cichlids should not be offered live fish as a source of food. This practice is unethical and increases the risk of transferring all kinds of parasites and diseases to the your fish.
