NT Labs Mediclay contains minerals essential to a healthy pond ecosystem. Minerals are an important part of the pond environment, particularly in heavily stocked koi ponds where water changes, filtration and biological activity can gradually affect the mineral balance.
Mediclay provides a simple way to supplement these minerals while supporting the pond’s biological system. NT Labs recommends it as a weekly additive to help maintain water quality and encourage beneficial bacterial activity.
Helps Bind Unwanted Substances
Mediclay particles carry a negative ionic charge, allowing positively charged substances to bond to them. According to NT Labs, this can help bind substances including heavy metals, ammonia and pesticides, preventing them from being freely available in the water.
The clay and substances bound to it are then gradually removed through routine water changes and filter maintenance.
Improving Pond Water Clarity
Mediclay can also be used specifically to improve water clarity. For the best dispersal, NT Labs recommends applying it where it will be rapidly mixed with the returning pond water, such as around a pump, venturi or filter outlet.
Temporary cloudiness immediately after application is normal as the fine clay particles disperse throughout the pond.
How to Use NT Labs Mediclay
Mix the required amount of Mediclay with pond water in a clean bucket or watering can before distributing it evenly across the pond surface or adding it near the filter outlet.
There are two recommended dose rates:
Routine water quality and clarity: 100g per 4,500 litres (1,000 gallons) each week
Fish with body damage or signs of ill health: 200g per 4,500 litres (1,000 gallons) each week
Mediclay can be used at any time of year. Do not use it within 48 hours of applying a pond medication, as the clay may bind some of the medication and reduce its effectiveness.
