NT Labs GH Mineral Up is a powdered mineral supplement designed to safely increase the general hardness (GH) of pond water. It is particularly useful in soft-water areas and in ponds where rainfall, water changes or ongoing biological processes have gradually depleted important hardness minerals.

General hardness primarily reflects dissolved minerals such as calcium and magnesium. These minerals play an important role in normal fish growth, metabolism and other biological functions, making an appropriate GH an important part of maintaining stable, healthy pond water.

Why Is GH Important in a Pond?

Calcium, magnesium and other hardness minerals are involved in numerous biological processes within a pond. Maintaining an appropriate mineral content supports normal physiological functions in fish while contributing to a more suitable overall aquatic environment.

GH is especially worth monitoring in koi ponds exposed to significant rainfall because rainwater contains very little hardness and can gradually dilute the mineral content of the pond.

How to Use NT Labs GH Mineral Up

First test the pond water with a suitable GH test kit to establish its current general hardness.

Dissolve the required quantity of GH Mineral Up in a clean bucket of pond water before adding the mixture to the pond. NT Labs states that 50ml of powder added to 340 litres (75 imperial gallons) will increase GH by approximately 3–4°dH.

Because the amount required depends upon both your pond volume and its existing GH, always test the water and follow the instructions on the product packaging when calculating your dose.

Suitable for Naturally Soft Water Areas

GH Mineral Up isn’t only useful when hardness has gradually fallen in an established pond. It can also provide additional general hardness where the mains water supply is naturally low in calcium, magnesium and other hardness minerals.

Regular testing allows you to monitor how quickly GH changes in your particular pond and correct it when necessary rather than treating unnecessarily.
