Nicaraguan Cichlids are one of the most beautiful cichlids available in the hobby. Sometimes referred to as Macaw Cichlids, the adults will colour up into a majestic yellow and blue form. Females tend to be more colourful and retain the vivid black bar that runs along the lateral line whilst the males develop a noticeable nuchal hump and the black bar often becomes a single dot at the centre of the body.

As far as central American Cichlids go, this is one of the more peaceful species to keep. They can however be exceptionally territorial when breeding, so a very large tank of 400L upwards is a must if a pair are to be kept with other Cichlids. Other tankmates can include large tetras such as congo, large barbs like Denisons, Catfish like Plecos and Raphaels and other similar sized fish that aren't likely to challenge the Nicaraguans. They can be kept with other Cichlids such as Acaras, Geophagus and Severums, but there must be enough space for territories.

The aquarium should have soft sand substrate and plenty of rocks and wood to act as hiding places and visual barriers. Plants can be added, but need to be robust species like Anubias and Java Fern, which the fish aren't likely to eat.

Food should be offered in the form Cichlid Sinking Pellets, Veggie Flakes and fresh or frozen fish foods such as mysis and brineshrimp.
