Live Glassworm 100ml Fish Food

Live Glassworm is an excellent food for fish that naturally feed in the middle and upper levels of the aquarium. Unlike bloodworm, which quickly sinks towards the substrate, glassworm tends to remain suspended in the water column for longer, giving fish more opportunity to hunt and feed naturally.

We often recommend glassworm for species that are reluctant to feed from the bottom of the aquarium, as well as newly acquired fish and fussy feeders that may ignore prepared foods. The movement of the larvae triggers a strong feeding response and can help encourage shy fish out into the open. If the glassworms are fed in marine conditions, they are likely to be closer to the surface and should be monitored carefully as they won’t live very long in a marine environment.

Glassworm is also a popular conditioning food for fish being prepared for breeding, as the high protein content can help improve condition and support spawning behaviour.

Feeding Guide: Feed your fish 1 to 2 times a day only as much as they will consume in a few minutes. Any uneaten food must be removed after the fish have finished feeding, before it has a chance to break down into harmful ammonia that could lead to potential water quality issues that would be detrimental to the wellbeing of your fish and other livestock. We recommend feeding live foods shortly after delivery, but if this isn’t possible, then storing the bags in the fridge will prolong shelf life substantially.

What is Glassworm?

Glassworm is the larval stage of a midge (Chaoborus sp.), sometimes referred to as white mosquito larvae. They are translucent in appearance, which is why they are referred to as “glassworm”.

How should live glassworm be stored before feeding?

Ideally you should keep live foods in the fridge or outside in the colder months. The lower temperatures help increase oxygen availability and slow the metabolism of the larvae, helping to prolong shelf life

Can you feed live glassworm to amphibians?

Absolutely. Live glassworms are readily accepted by most frogs, newts and other predators. In fact, they are more likely to accept it than frozen or dry foods.

Are glassworms better than bloodworm?

Both have their advantages and many aquarists choose to feed both as part of a varied diet. Bloodworm is generally better suited to larger fish and bottom-feeding species, while glassworm tends to remain suspended in the water column for longer. This makes glassworm particularly useful for smaller fish and species that naturally feed in the middle and upper levels of the aquarium.

Are glassworms good for breeding fish?

Yes. Glassworms are naturally rich in protein and are widely used to condition fish before breeding. The movement of the live larvae also helps stimulate feeding responses, making them particularly useful for fish that need bringing into peak condition before spawning. Many breeders increase the amount of live foods offered in the weeks leading up to breeding attempts.
