Kuhli Loach (Pangio sp.)

The Kuhli Loach is an unusual, peaceful bottom-dwelling fish with a long, eel-like body and distinctive dark bands over a yellow to orange-brown background. They’re quite unlike most other community fish and are particularly entertaining when kept in a good-sized group.

Kuhli Loaches have a reputation for being secretive, and there’s some truth in that. They’re naturally happiest amongst plants, wood, leaf litter and other sheltered areas, rather than permanently swimming around in the open.

Providing plenty of cover actually helps Kuhli Loaches feel more secure, and when kept in a suitable group they’re often more confident about venturing out and behaving naturally.

Aquarium Set Up

A soft sand substrate is one of the most important considerations when setting up an aquarium for Kuhli Loaches.

They spend a great deal of time foraging around the bottom and may partially bury themselves in the substrate. Soft sand allows them to search naturally without the risk of abrasion from sharp or coarse gravel.

Plants, bogwood, smooth rocks, caves and areas of leaf litter can all provide useful shelter. Kuhlis appreciate plenty of hiding places and generally prefer relatively subdued surroundings rather than a brightly illuminated, completely open aquarium.

Keep Kuhli Loaches in a Group

Kuhli Loaches are social fish and shouldn’t be kept individually.

A group of at least five or six is recommended, with larger groups being even better where aquarium space allows.

Interestingly, providing plenty of companions and hiding places can actually make Kuhlis more visible. Secure fish are more likely to emerge, forage and interact naturally, while isolated or nervous individuals may spend much of their time hidden away.

Several Kuhlis will often squeeze together beneath wood, amongst plants or inside a favourite cave.

Escape Artists – Check Your Filter

Kuhli Loaches have a remarkable ability to find their way into places you didn’t think a fish could possibly reach.

Check filter intakes carefully, particularly with smaller individuals. If openings are large enough for a Kuhli to squeeze through, fitting an appropriate fine intake guard or pre-filter sponge can help prevent them from disappearing into the filter.

A secure aquarium cover is also recommended, particularly when the fish are newly introduced.

If a Kuhli appears to have vanished, checking the filter and every improbable hiding place is worthwhile before assuming the fish has been lost.

Behaviour & Tank Mates

Kuhli Loaches are extremely peaceful and make excellent inhabitants for a calm tropical community aquarium.

Suitable companions include small tetras, rasboras and other peaceful midwater fish, along with appropriately sized community species that won’t intimidate or outcompete them.

Avoid large, aggressive or excessively boisterous tank mates.

Kuhlis themselves rarely cause problems for other fish. Most of their time is spent foraging, exploring the substrate, resting amongst cover and interacting with other Kuhli Loaches.

Feeding

Kuhli Loaches are bottom feeders, but they shouldn’t be expected to survive entirely on leftovers from other aquarium fish.

Offer dedicated sinking foods such as small pellets, wafers or granules, supplemented with suitable frozen or live foods including Daphnia, brine shrimp and bloodworm.

Because Kuhlis can become more active under subdued lighting, feeding towards the evening can be useful, particularly in a busy community aquarium.

Always make sure enough food reaches the bottom rather than allowing faster midwater fish to eat everything first.

Medication – Take Extra Care

Kuhli Loaches can be sensitive to some aquarium medications.

Always check the manufacturer’s instructions carefully to ensure a treatment is suitable for loaches and other sensitive fish before use.

Never automatically reduce or increase the recommended dose unless the product instructions specifically advise doing so.

Why Choose Kuhli Loaches?

Kuhli Loaches are one of the most characterful bottom-dwelling fish available for a peaceful tropical aquarium.

They’re not necessarily the best choice for somebody wanting a fish that’s permanently on display at the front of the tank. Much of their appeal comes from their unusual appearance and natural behaviour — emerging from beneath wood at feeding time, wriggling between plants, gathering together in favourite hiding places and occasionally becoming surprisingly active.

Kept as a proper group in an aquarium designed around their natural behaviour, Kuhli Loaches are fascinating fish to watch.
