The Grass Carp is a relative of the common carp that's native to Russia. Over the years these fish have become increasingly popular among pond keepers as a solution to algae and duckweed control, but they are by no means suitable for all ponds. These fish will grow over 1m in length and will therefore need a substantial pond to go into. Smaller juveniles can be kept in ponds of 5000L upwards, but they do grow exceptionally fast and will need more space. The pond should be at least 4ft deep to help reduce temperature fluctuations during the colder months.
These Carp enjoy a predominantly vegetarian diet, but algae alone will not support them and they will need to be fed good quality pond flake, pellets and additional treats such as peas, oranges and lettuce.
