Weather Loaches or are a very active fun species suitable for temperate aquariums. They are very large, so the aquarium must be at least 4ft long to accommodate them. They can adapt to a wide range of conditions and tend to be fairly undemanding. Substrate should be sand to protect their delicate barbels and to allow them to engage in natural burrowing behaviour. The addition of bog wood, plants and rocks will help the weather loach find shady areas to rest in. There should be a tight fitting lid as they are accomplished jumpers.
These loaches are peaceful and highly social. They should be maintained in a group of at least 3 specimens. Tank mates can be any fish that isn't easily disturbed by the weather loach's highly active nature, but be aware that they eat small snails and other invertebrates.
Misgurnus anguillicaudatus have been named weather loaches because of their reaction to low atmospheric pressure, which usually makes them erratic. They're like living barometers. In a sense, they can predict storms.
Food should be offered in the form of sinking catfish pellets and fresh or frozen insect larvae such as brine shrimp, mysis and bloodworm.
It is important to remember that Misgurnus anguillicaudatus may be referred to as Cold Water fish, but they should not be kept outdoors in the UK as they will not be able to cope with winter conditions.
