Description
Feather Duster Worm – Sabellastarte sp
Feather Duster Worms – Sabellastarte sp. are among the most unique and eye-catching invertebrates available to marine aquarists. Their beautiful crown of delicate, feather-like tentacles creates a striking display as it gently sways in the aquarium current, adding movement, colour, and interest to any reef system. These fascinating animals are a favourite amongst reef keepers looking for something a little different from the more commonly kept corals and invertebrates.
Despite their plant-like appearance, Feather Duster Worms are actually marine tube worms that spend their lives within a protective tube constructed from sand, debris, and natural secretions. Extending from this tube is their characteristic feathery crown, which serves both as a feeding structure and as a respiratory organ. If disturbed, the worm can retract its crown into the tube in an instant, making for an impressive natural defence mechanism
Feather Duster Worms are peaceful filter feeders that capture microscopic food particles, plankton, and other suspended organic matter from the water column. In established reef aquariums they can contribute to the natural filtration process by removing fine particles from the water while adding a truly ornamental element to the display. Their elegant feeding behaviour and unusual appearance make them a fascinating species to observe throughout the day.
These worms are considered reef safe and can generally be kept alongside corals, shrimp, snails, and reef-safe fish without issue. Care should be taken when selecting tank mates, as some butterflyfish, angelfish, wrasses, puffers, and other invertebrate-feeding species may nip at their delicate crown.
Feather Duster Worms are best suited to mature marine aquariums where natural populations of plankton and microorganisms are already established. In some systems, supplemental feeding with phytoplankton or specialist filter-feeding foods may be beneficial to ensure long-term health and growth. Stable water quality is particularly important, as sudden changes in water parameters can cause stress and may result in the worm shedding its crown, which can later regrow under suitable conditions.
Whether placed amongst live rock, coral structures, or sandy areas of the aquarium, Feather Duster Worms bring a distinctive natural beauty that few other marine invertebrates can match. Their graceful movement and unusual appearance make them an excellent choice for reef keepers looking to add diversity and visual interest to their marine aquarium.
This species is strictly for marine aquariums and must not be kept in freshwater (tropical or coldwater) or terrestrial environments, as they will not survive outside of saltwater conditions.
