The European Perch is one of the most striking fish you'll find in our native waters, with their distinctive stripes, vibrant green body and red fins. These predatory fish are most likely to be found in deeper water, but can also occur in streams and other shallower bodies of water. Though they are predators, they can be kept with most other pond fish that grow to a larger size than the perch, but smaller fish and fry will be hunted.
Ideally the pond should be fairly large as the these fish can be somewhat territorial towards their own kind. Vegetation would be beneficial as the perch will use it as a breeding ground and it will offer hiding spots and enrichment for the fish. The pond should be at least least 5 feet deep in some parts as these fish prefer to be deeper down, where they feel secure and safe from predators. They prefer a gentler flow. Due to their meaty diet, filtration should be taken very seriously and regular maintenance is essential as these fish can be very sensitive to deteriorating water conditions.
Food can be offered in the form of carnivore pellets, bloodworm, mysis shrimp and other meaty fares.
Keepers should be careful when trying to handle these fish as they have very hard spines in their dorsal fins, sharp gills and spikes in their pelvic and anal fins.
