The Sparkling Gourami is a small species of labyrinth fish that's ideally suited to peaceful communities with smaller fish. This delicate looking little fish is quite shy and peaceful in temperament and poses little threat to other species, though they will most likely eat small shrimp. The males can sometimes bicker during breeding season, but seldom cause any real harm. As the name suggests, they are able to make an audible croaking sound!
The aquarium should be planted and furnished with plenty of drift wood, rocks and caves to serve as hiding places. The filtration needs to be decent, but it is very important that the flow is kept as gentle as possible. As with all Gouramies, Croaking Gouramies are labyrinth fish and can therefore breathe atmospheric oxygen. Access to the surface of the water needs to be available to facilitate that.
Tank mates for the Croaking Gourami should be chosen carefully. Nippy and boisterous species should be avoided, as well as all Betta. Smaller peaceful species such as Rasboras, Kuhli Loaches, Tetras, Suckermouth Catfish, Cories and other similar species would be a better choice.
Food should be offered in the form of micro pellets and fresh or frozen fish foods such as daphnia and brine shrimp.
