The Coral Hogfish is an attractive species from the Indo-Pacific region where it inhabits reef slopes of up to 40m depth. They are one of the few fish of their kind that are beautiful as a juvenile and as an adult. Juveniles in captivity can be observed cleaning their tank mates on a regular basis, but as they are not obligatory cleaners, they may not provide this service consistently or permanently. They are a very confident and active species that will often be seen swimming around the tank.

As they grow to a fairly decent size, the tank should be reasonably large with plenty of open swimming space as well as hiding places in and around the rock. This species is not reef safe and should be kept in a fish only system. It will eat brittlestars, clams, crustaceans, snails, urchins, and worms. Because of their diet and appetite, powerful filtration is essential to keep on top of water quality.

This fish is highly territorial and shouldn’t be kept with any other Hogfish or small and docile species of fish. Ideal tankmates would be other medium to large semi aggressive species that can hold their own.
