Description
Colombo Lernex Pro Fluke Treatment 1000ml
Colombo Morenicol Lernex PRO is an improved version of Colombo Morenicol Lernex, developed for the parasite treatment against resistant flukes on ornamental fish. Lernex PRO is based on the most recent scientific knowledge and contains high quality antihelminthics like Nitroscanate and Flubendazole, against which no resistance has been built up yet by the parasites. Therefore, Colombo Lernex PRO fluke treatment is effective against resistant skin flukes (Gyrodactylus) and gill flukes (Dactylogyrus). The presence of these parasites can only be determined with a microscope.
Skin- and gill worms (flukes) are flattish trematodes, 0.3-0.5 mm in size which were previously relatively uncommon in pond fish. However, nowadays they are regularly encountered. Gyrodactylus is the skin worm. This worm gives birth to living young and is therefore capable of rapid and massive reproduction. The resultant skin irritation gives rise to thickening of the skin and to the production of a slimy mucous layer over the skin.
The gill worm is called Dactylogyrus. This parasite lays eggs. It causes damage and irritation to the gills with resultant thickening and loss of full function. Infested fish rub their gills on plants and stones. In advanced cases they swim with the gills permanently opened and they can even die.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my koi have flukes?
Common signs of a fluke infestation include flashing, rubbing against pond walls, excess mucus production, clamped fins and rapid gill movement. Where possible, diagnosis should be confirmed with a mucus scrape and microscope examination before treatment. In our experience, flukes are one of the most commonly misdiagnosed koi health issues. Many symptoms can also be caused by poor water quality, bacterial infections, Costia, Trichodina and other parasites, so we always recommend checking water parameters and, where possible, confirming the presence of flukes via a scrape and microscope before medicating. Did you know that Shirley Aquatics can do scrapes? Give us a call to find out more!
Does Lernex kill filter bacteria?
Colombo Lernex Pro is designed to target parasitic worms rather than the beneficial bacteria responsible for biological filtration. However, as with any pond treatment, we recommend monitoring water quality during and after treatment
How long does Colombo Lernex Pro take to work?
This is a one dose treatment and should get to work immediately, although it may take several days before you see a noticeable improvement in the fish. If there are still signs of flukes after seven days, a second dose may be required. The water should be re-tested first to ensure that the symptoms are not water quality related and the fish should be scraped again to confirm the presence of flukes.
Can Colombo Lernex Pro be used with salt?
Yes. This is one of the few fluke treatments that does not react to salt.
Should I turn off my UV before using it?
Yes. UV clarifiers are designed to destroy impurities in water and treatments will also be rendered ineffective by it.
Should I treat the whole pond if only one fish is affected?
Yes. Flukes are highly contagious and will spread. It’s best to treat the whole pond to ensure that no other fish will be affected.
Do I need a microscope to identify flukes?
Yes, a microscope is the only reliable way to confirm the presence of skin and gill flukes. Flashing and excess mucus can be a strong indication of flukes, but the same can be said for water quality issues and several other things.
