Description
Clown Tang
The Clown Tang (Acanthurus lineatus), also known as the Clown Surgeonfish or Lined Surgeonfish, is one of the most striking marine fish available to experienced aquarists. Its vivid yellow, blue and black horizontal stripes, pale underside and beautifully patterned fins make it a spectacular addition to a large marine aquarium.
Native to the Indo-Pacific, this species inhabits shallow coral reefs and exposed coastal environments, where it grazes on algae in areas with strong water movement.
Reaching approximately 38cm, the Clown Tang is a powerful, highly active swimmer with a territorial personality. Although undeniably beautiful, it is a demanding species that requires considerable space, excellent water quality and carefully selected tank mates.
Clown Tang Set Up
A mature marine aquarium of at least 1,000 litres is recommended, with larger systems and a long swimming area strongly preferred.
This species naturally inhabits turbulent reef environments, so strong, well-distributed water movement and excellent oxygenation are particularly important.
Provide substantial open swimming space alongside established live rock for grazing and shelter. Rockwork should be arranged to create clear swimming routes rather than obstructing the aquarium.
Efficient filtration, stable water chemistry and a secure aquarium cover are essential.
Clown Tang Behaviour
Clown Tangs are exceptionally active, confident fish that spend much of their day swimming and grazing.
However, they are also among the more territorial surgeonfish, particularly as they mature.
Established specimens may aggressively defend their preferred swimming and feeding areas, especially against other tangs and similarly shaped fish.
Their sharp caudal spines can cause injury during territorial disputes, making careful stocking particularly important.
A single specimen is generally recommended for the home aquarium.
Tank Mates
Suitable companions include robust, confident marine fish that can tolerate an assertive and highly active tank mate.
Potential companions include larger angelfish, rabbitfish and other appropriately sized marine species, provided the aquarium offers sufficient space.
Avoid timid, slow-moving fish and species likely to compete directly for territory.
Particular caution is required when introducing other surgeonfish, especially members of the Acanthurus genus.
Ideally, this species should be introduced after more peaceful fish have established themselves.
Feeding
The Clown Tang is primarily herbivorous, naturally grazing on filamentous algae and other marine plant material.
A suitable aquarium diet should include:
-
Dried marine seaweed and nori
-
Spirulina-based marine foods
-
Quality herbivore pellets
-
Marine algae preparations
-
Fresh macroalgae where appropriate
-
Occasional frozen mysis or enriched brineshrimp
Vegetable-based foods should form the majority of the diet.
Provide regular opportunities to graze throughout the day, ideally using seaweed clips or feeding stations.
A varied, algae-rich diet helps maintain body condition and supports long-term health.
Is the Clown Tang Reef Safe?
Yes.
This species is generally considered reef safe and does not normally feed on healthy corals.
Its natural grazing behaviour can help control certain types of algae within established reef aquariums.
However, its eventual size, powerful swimming and territorial nature mean it is only suitable for exceptionally spacious reef systems.
Corals and decorations should be securely positioned to accommodate its activity.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 24–27°C pH: 8.1–8.4 Specific gravity: 1.023–1.026 Alkalinity: Approximately 8–12 dKH
Strong oxygenation, excellent water quality and stable conditions are particularly important.
Care Level
Advanced
The Clown Tang is best suited to experienced marine aquarists with very large, established aquariums.
Its substantial adult size, high oxygen requirements, constant swimming activity and territorial temperament make it unsuitable for most standard home marine systems.
Newly imported specimens can also be challenging to acclimatise and may be sensitive to stress and poor water quality.
With appropriate accommodation, a carefully planned diet and suitable companions, this magnificent surgeonfish can become an impressive centrepiece.
This species is strictly for marine aquariums and must not be kept in freshwater (tropical or coldwater) or terrestrial environments, as they will not survive outside of saltwater conditions.
