The Chalk Goby is a sand sifting Goby that's suited to experienced Reef Keepers. They are known for burrowing, so it is important to ensure that the layer of live sand in the base of the aquarium is thick enough to accommodate it and all rocks and structures are stable. Their feeding habits also revolve around sand sifting as they extract small invertebrates from mouthfuls of sand and expelling the excess sand through their gills. They can be a little messy though as they aren't particular about where they dump the sand and as a result, some reef keepers find that their corals get covered in it. They do however perform well at turning the substrate. Because of this feeding habit, it is important that the aquarium is mature enough to have invertebrate life in the sand to support the Goby. Otherwise the Goby may starve. Additionally plenty of food should make it to the base of the aquarium to supplement the Goby's diet..
These fish should not be kept with others of their own or within the same family as they will likely fight over territory. The only exception is a male and female pair. A jump guard or aquarium lid is essential for this species as they are very accomplished jumpers.
