Boomerang triggers are a distinctive fish that can be somewhat challenging to keep due to their very specific needs and habits. The aquarium needs to be large (minimum 300L) with no other boomerangs or similar shaped fish. They are not suitable for reefs as they may nip at corals and invertebrates.

Known for their curious and intelligent nature, they often like to rearrange their aquariums, so large, heavy rocks are recommended. Smaller rocks should be affixed into position using milliput and other similar putty to prevent the fish accidentally damaging the aquarium. Caves and hides will offer stimulation for the fish as it searches for food.

The boomerang triggerfish can be somewhat territorial towards tank mates and will not tolerate their own kind unless they're a bonded pair. They can be kept with larger robust fish such as tangs, angels, puffers and certain wrasses, but smaller timid fish should be avoided is they're likely to be bullied. Shrimps and Crabs are not recommended as they're almost guaranteed to be considered food.

They are omnivores and should be fed a varied diet of meaty foods, pellets and seaweed. Offering different foods several times a day ensures that their dietary needs are met.

Triggerfish are a big commitment and proper research should be done before adding one to your aquarium. If in doubt, contact us and a member of our friendly marine team will be more than happy to answer all of your questions.
