The Bolivian Ram is the easiest of the Rams to keep. It is a hardy, community friendly dwarf cichlid native to Bolivia and Brazil. They prefer soft, acidic water in an aquarium that's at least 75cm long for a single pair. This allows the Rams to have their individual territories outside of breeding times, which in turn reduces the likelihood of an territorial disputes. With that said, these fish are not particularly aggressive when they're not breeding and can be housed in communities. They will spend much of their time near the base of the aquarium.

The substrate should be sand to accommodate the natural feeding and digging behaviour of the fish. The addition of plants and bog wood is very welcome as it gives the fish shady spots, hiding places and opportunities to establish clear territories.

Ideal tank mates are probably best selected from other South American species as they're more likely to have similar water requirements. We recommend most Tetras, Corydoras, Ancistrus catfish, Angelfish and some of the smaller, peaceful catfish. Avoid large Cichlids as they may intimidate the Bolivians and cause them to hide.

Food can be offered in the form of sinking pellets, flakes and fresh or frozen fish foods like brine shrimp and daphnia.

Please note that the fish you are buying are still juveniles and have yet to colour up. Offering a healthy environment and good quality high protein food will help bring them into full colour.
