Echinodorus Bleheri (Amazon Sword) has dark green to lime green broad leaves and is a great background plant. It it easy to keep but does need pruning to prevent depriving plants underneath it of light as the Amazon Sword does grow really rather huge. Flow should also be accounted for as particularly strong flow can cause damage to the large leaves as they flap in the current.
Good quality fertiliser and substrate will go a long way with this plant, keeping leaves uniform colour and without any blotches. We wouldn't recommend this plant for small aquariums as it will take up too much space. In larger aquariums, they are great for hiding filters, heaters and other aquarium equipment.
Strong lighting combined with iron rich fertiliser will ensure strong healthy growth and deep green colouration. Amazon Swords reproduce by sending out a single runner on which a new plant will begin to grow. These can be detached from the mother plant and transplanted elsewhere.
When planting bunched plants, remove the weight and the foam attached and plant in good quality planting substrate. Small rocks and ornaments can be placed around the plant and pressed down gently to help keep the plant firmly in position until the roots have established and anchored the plant. Once the plant is settled and no longer trying to float, any objects used to anchor it can be removed.
