Halloween Hermit Crab
The Halloween Hermit Crab (Ciliopagurus strigatus) is a striking marine invertebrate, instantly recognisable by its bright orange and black striped legs. Its unusual colouring makes it one of the most distinctive hermit crabs available for marine aquariums.
Native to the Indo-Pacific, this active scavenger spends much of its time exploring rockwork and searching for algae, leftover food and organic debris. It makes an interesting addition to an established marine aquarium, although its larger size and sometimes opportunistic behaviour mean it requires more consideration than smaller clean-up crew hermits.
Halloween Hermit Crab Set Up
A mature marine aquarium with plenty of established rockwork is ideal for this species. We recommend a minimum aquarium size of approximately 100 litres, with larger systems preferable.
Provide caves, crevices and open areas where the crab can forage. A selection of suitably sized empty shells is particularly important, allowing it to move into larger accommodation as it grows.
Unlike many small hermit crabs, this species often favours elongated, cone-shaped shells.
Halloween Hermit Crab Behaviour
Halloween Hermits are active and entertaining scavengers, regularly climbing across rockwork and investigating their surroundings.
Although generally peaceful towards fish, they can be opportunistic and may attack snails or other hermit crabs, particularly when suitable replacement shells are unavailable.
They are also surprisingly strong for their size and may dislodge loosely positioned coral frags or small decorations.
Tank Mates
Suitable companions include peaceful marine fish and other appropriately sized aquarium inhabitants.
However, caution is advised when keeping them with small snails, delicate invertebrates or smaller hermit crabs.
Avoid predatory fish such as puffers and triggerfish, which may regard the crab as a meal.
Feeding
Halloween Hermit Crabs are omnivorous scavengers that consume a variety of foods.
Their diet can include:
-
Marine algae and biofilm
-
Detritus and leftover fish food
-
Sinking marine pellets
-
Dried seaweed
-
Frozen mysis shrimp
-
Small portions of suitable meaty marine foods
Although they help consume leftover food, they should not be expected to survive entirely on aquarium waste.
Supplementary feeding is particularly important in very clean aquariums.
Is the Halloween Hermit Crab Reef Safe?
Reef safe with caution.
Halloween Hermits do not typically target healthy corals as a food source, but their size and strength can make them troublesome in delicate reef displays.
They may knock over unsecured coral frags, disturb small invertebrates and occasionally attack snails for their shells.
They’re best suited to established reef aquariums where their behaviour can be accommodated.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 23–27°C pH: 8.1–8.4 Specific gravity: 1.023–1.026 Alkalinity: Approximately 8–12 dKH
Stable water conditions are essential, particularly during moulting. Like other marine invertebrates, hermit crabs are sensitive to copper-based medications and sudden changes in salinity.
Care Level
Easy to Intermediate
This species is generally hardy once established, but its size, shell requirements and opportunistic feeding behaviour make it slightly less straightforward than smaller reef hermits.
Provide a varied diet, plenty of suitable shells and stable water conditions for the best results.
This species is strictly for marine aquariums and must not be kept in freshwater (tropical or coldwater) or terrestrial environments, as they will not survive outside of saltwater conditions.
