Description
Giant Fan Shrimp – Atya gabonensis
The Giant Fan Shrimp, also known as Armoured Shrimp and Vampire Shrimp is an exceptionally large species. At first glance, it is quite an intimidating creature, but in reality they are completely harmless.
The Aquarium
This species requires a fairly large aquarium with moderate to fast flow. Furnishings such as plants, wood and rocks are essential as the shrimp will use these to perch on where they find the flow to be at its optimum. This is necessary as these are fan shrimp, so the front claws actually open into a fan, which the shrimp uses to sift out food particles in the water column. Filtration must be efficient as this species can be very sensitive to pollutants in the water. Dim lighting is preferred, but shady areas will also suffice. The aquarium does need to be mature as these shrimp rely heavily on food particles and micro-organisms in the water column.
Behaviour
These shrimp are very peaceful and prefer to be in groups. They may sometimes get territorial over the best perching spots, but this is more likely to happen in smaller tanks or where there is a limited amount of items for the shrimp to perch on. They don’t concern themselves with other tank mates, but naturally, large species of fish should be avoided as they may still try to eat the shrimp.
Feeding
Though fan shrimp will feed on what’s available already, it is advised that their diet is supplemented with frozen foods such as cyclops or copepods to ensure they have plenty.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is it sometimes called a vampire shrimp?
Despite the intimidating name, Vampire Shrimp are completely harmless filter feeders. The name is believed to originate from their dark colouration and unusual appearance rather than their behaviour. They do not hunt fish, shrimp or other aquarium inhabitants.
Are Giant Fan Shrimp safe with other shrimp?
Yes. Though much larger, these shrimp can be kept with amanos and cherry shrimp, as well as other peaceful shrimp species.
Why does my giant fan shrimp hide all the time?
These shrimp, especially as juveniles can be a little nervous when they are first introduced to the aquarium. However, after a week or two, you should expect to see your shrimp out and about. You will eventually see that it has a favourite spot that it will habitually visit, probably because it’s the best spot for feeding.
Did you know? If a Giant Fan Shrimp starts picking through the substrate with its fans folded, it can be a sign that insufficient food is available in the water column. Healthy individuals are usually seen perched in flowing water with their fans fully extended.
