The Glass Fish ( Parambassis ranga ), sometimes referred to as Indian Glassfish is a truly odd looking species that’s a real talking point. These amazing fish are completely transparent and yet incredibly hardy once they’re settled. They are endemic to South East Asia’s slow moving waters and can sometimes be found even in brackish mildly conditions. They are fairly peaceful, but can sometimes be quite boisterous, so they should be kept in shoals of 6 or more individuals.
The aquarium should be mature, well planted and fully furnished with bog wood, rocks and other things that can serve as hiding places and enrichment. The substrate should ideally be dark. Though there is some misinformation on the internet about this species needing brackish water, this is not true. They do best in freshwater that’s more on the alkaline side. Flow should be gentle, but the aquarium well oxygenated.
Tank mates can be chosen easily as these fish are not particularly troublesome. Smaller species should ideally be avoided as these fish can reach up to 8cm in length and could potentially mistake very small fish for dinner. Ideal tank mates could be Barbs, Gouramies, Livebearers, Rainbowfish, Catfish and Loaches among others.
Food can be offered in the form of high quality pellets, as well as fresh or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, mysis, bloodworm and daphnia.
