Description

Juncus ensifolius – green rush

Juncus ensifolius, commonly known as swordleaf rush or dagger-leaved rush, is a striking wetland perennial prized for its upright habit, flattened iris-like foliage, and distinctive rounded flower clusters in rich brown to purplish tones. Native to wet meadows, marshes, stream edges, and pond margins, it brings strong vertical texture and natural movement to water gardens, rain gardens, and damp borders. Its rhizomatous growth helps it knit into moist soils over time, making it a useful choice for naturalistic planting, habitat gardens, and erosion-prone wet areas.

Key Features

  • Distinctive wetland perennial with upright stems and flattened, sword-like foliage
  • Decorative rounded flower and seed clusters in green, brown, and purplish tones through summer
  • Ideal for pond margins, rain gardens, bioswales, marshy borders, and consistently damp soils
  • Typically reaches around 30–60 cm tall with a clump-forming to slowly spreading habit
  • Useful for wildlife-friendly planting and helpful for stabilising wet or erosion-prone ground
  • Low maintenance and well suited to naturalistic schemes and ornamental water features

Care Instructions

Grow Juncus ensifolius in full sun to partial shade in consistently moist to wet soil. It is ideal for bog gardens, marshy borders, rain gardens, and pond margins with shallow moisture rather than deep standing water. Plant in fertile, moisture-retentive soil and do not allow it to dry out during the growing season. Tidy away tired foliage if needed, and divide established clumps from mid-spring to early summer to control spread and refresh growth.
