Rams are a peaceful dwarf cichlid that we recommend for more experienced aquarists. They are best maintained as a male and female pair, but can be kept as a colony in large tanks that offer enough space for all the fish to have their own individual territories. In smaller tanks, the Rams may become aggressive, especially if they're breeding. The aquarium should be furnished with plants, bog wood and caves that the fish can use to establish their territories. They'll also offer valuable hiding places and allow the fish to explore. The water should be soft and acidic.

Frequent partial water changes are essential to the wellbeing of the Gold Ram as they are incredibly sensitive to Nitrates. Excellent water quality must be maintained at all times for these delicate fish, but flow shouldn't be particularly powerful. Tank mates should be chosen carefully. They need to be able to thrive in soft acidic conditions and at higher temperatures as the Rams do best when it's warmer. Several South American species of Tetra like cardinals, neons and rummies as well as corydoras will do great. Other potential tank mates could be Angelfish, Plecos and other peaceful catfish.  Avoid any larger cichlids as they may stress the Rams out.

Food can be offered in the form of micro pellets and fresh or frozen fish foods such as mysis, brine shrimp and daphnia.
