Water Lettuce Floating Pond Plant
Pistia stratiotes (water lettuce) - native to South America is often grown as an ornamental floating pond plant in UK. It Provides shade and cover for fish & other pondlife which shelter under the fibrous roots. This makes them feel more secure because they don't feel like they'll be easily spotted by a predator like a heron. Small fry will also utilise the roots to hide in from adult fish. In addition to that, like all plants, Water Lettuce will consume some of the nitrates in the pond, helping to keep your water quality under control This plant is often considered invasive but it's not actually able to survive frosts or British Winters. You can either treat it as an annual and replace it the following year or it can be overwintered in heated greenhouse or conservatory. Keep this plant away from any waterfalls or fountains as it doesn't like having wet leaves
Available to buy from April till September
