PH testing is important as it is one of the parameters that can slowly creep up on you. Whilst most fish are able to adapt to a wide range of conditions, some will absolutely not tolerate pH being out of their target range. But if not monitored correctly, pH can drastically change over time and cause problems for your aquarium's cycle and the health of your fish.
Old tank syndrome is a common cause for issues in aquariums and it is caused by pH dropping too low and KH being depleted completely. It's usually brought on by insufficient water changes, but can be prevented by simply keeping an eye on the pH. PH can also creep up if there are fixtures like ocean rock in the aquarium continuously releasing calcium. This can become dangerously high and cause fish to perish as a result. This can be prevented by simply checking pH once a week to ensure that it stays within the correct parameters.
