The Rainbow Cichlid is a Central American species. It is one of the smaller species of Central American Cichlids, but by no means a dwarf. Rainbows are quite peaceful in comparison to other Cichlids from that region and can be kept in a community of other robust tropical fish such as large tetras, barbs, rainbowfish and others. As the name would suggest, they can be very colourful. It is worth noting that there is also a native population of these fish in Hungary where they were released into the natural springs and have thrived ever since.
The aquarium should be spacious to allow these fish to form their territories, especially if several specimens are being kept. Substrate should be soft sand and the aquarium should be furnished with tangles of driftwood, plants, rocks and caves to allow for hiding places and stimulation. Frequent partial water changes are recommended as these fish can be sensitive to water quality issues.
Food can be offered in the form of Cichlid pellets, flakes and fresh or frozen fish foods such as mysis, brine shrimp and bloodworm.
Please note that the fish we are selling here are still juveniles and have yet to colour up. Feeding them a balanced diet and offering a healthy clean environment will help bring out their natural beauty faster!
