25cm Sakuma Kohaku Japanese Koi
Kohaku are the original (and by some accounts the best!) koi. The iconic snowy white fish with red (hi) patterning is the most widely recognised variety, featured worldwide as the visual representative of Japanese Koi as we know them. They can come in a variety of patterns, including the rather unique and sought after Tancho, but there are certain things that should be taken into account when choosing a Kohaku. The white (shiroji) should be clear and snowy in colour. The red (hi) should be vivid with crisp, distinct edging (kiwa). Juvenile Kohaku often have more orange colouration than red, but this will intensify as the fish matures. Markings can be a variety of patterns, but should not fall below the lateral line.
This lovely specimen is around 1 years old and shows excellent form with strong markings. A lovely addition to any Koi collection!
A message form John Cook about Sakuma
"We started dealing with Sakuma San in the early 80’s his son Hajime now runs the show, together with his brother and Mum, who, even in her 80’s really looks after us when we visit. Sakuma are world renowned for their production of the Gosanke varieties, Showa, Kohaku & Sanke. Hajime came over to see is un the early 90’s together with Ogawa San and Narita San. We have built up an extremely good relationship with them over the past 45 years and they are always a must see when we go on buying trips to Japan."
