Rummynose Tetra are one of the most popular small shoaling species of fish in community aquariums. They are one of the finest shoalers and seldom break away from the general group of their own kind. This is a relatively hardy fish that can adapt to a wide range of conditions, but soft, acidic water is most recommended to get the best out of them. They are a shoaling species that should be kept in groups of 6 or more specimens. In their natural habitat, they occupy blackwater habitats, but specimens found in shops are almost certain to be tank bred and can be a little more flexible.

Ideally they should be kept with other South American species such as discus, angelfish, apistogrammas, cories, other tetras and plecos as these all enjoy the same sort of conditions as the Rummies. Avoid larger aggressive cichlids as they're likely to eat the Rummies.

Food can be offered in the form of flakes, micro pellets and fresh or frozen fish foods such as daphnia.
