The Silver Dollar is a shy shoaling species of fish that grows to a substantial size. Like most disc shaped characins, silver dollars are extremely skittish and have a tendency to go darting all over the place. For that reason, the aquarium decor should be carefully chosen to accommodate hiding spaces, but also avoid the fish injuring themselves when darting for cover. Rounded rocks and large pieces for bog wood would be ideal, along with shaded areas. They aquarium itself should be at least 6ft long to allow space for these fish as they must be kept in shoals of at least 6 specimens. A tight fitting lid is essential as they often jump out of the water when spooked and the filtration should be powerful with a strong flow. Plants are not recommended as they Dollars will most likely shred them.
They are a peaceful species that are largely herbivorous and will coexist well with most community fish, especially the slower, more peaceful ones. Small species should however be avoided as they'll most likely be viewed as food and large, aggressive species like Central American Cichlids should also be avoided as they are likely to spook the dollars.
Food can be offered in the form of flakes and pellets, as well as fresh or frozen fish foods such as mysis shrimp, brineshrimp, bloodworm and mosquito larvae.
