Kuhli Loach are a very sociable, charming little species. They must be maintained in groups of 5 or more individuals. The aquarium should have soft sand substrate to protect the delicate barbels of this loach and there should be plenty of wood, rocks and plants to offer them hiding places and stimulation. They like to congregate amongst plants and leaf litter as part of their social behaviour. It is recommended that filter inlets are checked and potentially covered by a fine mesh bag. If the loaches are small enough to fit through, they will definitely get into the filter given half a chance.
Tank mates should be small peaceful species such as rasboras, small gouramies like the Sparkilng, small rainbowfish like threadfin and other fish of similar temperament. Avoid fish that are particularly boisterous. It is worth noting that these loaches are well known for spending very little time out in the open, so getting a larger number would be the key to ever seeing one. Additionally, care should be taken when treating the aquarium as they are very sensitive to certain medications such as Formaldehyde (Commonly found in anti white spot treatments). Always check labels and if in doubt, only do a half dose.
Food can be offered in the form of catfish pellets, micro pellets and fresh or frozen live foods such as mosquito larvae and daphnia.
