Non return valves are an important piece for kit for your pond or aquarium equipment. Most equipment operates on a pump to move air or water in one direction. However, this creates a connection between the body of water and the equipment. If the equipment ceases to work (power cut, switched off etc) and the body of water is at a higher level than the equipment, the flow will immediately reverse and back syphon into the equipment. On open equipment, this can cause flooding and your aquarium or pond being drained.
Non return valves prevent that very thing from happening. Pressure from flow opens the valve in one direction, but if the flow ceases, the valve closes immediately, preventing a back syphon. This item should be fitted on all pipework as a safety mechanism that prevents entire ponds and aquariums being drained and certain equipment from being destroyed.
