The Mitratus Butterflyfish is a slightly more difficult fish to keep. They prefer temperatures on the lower side, owing to their natural habitat being very deep. Like all butterflies, they demand excellent water conditions and areas of filamentous algae growth is highly recommended. Water needs to be well filtered and highly oxygenated with areas of strong current.
Some aquarists have kept these fish successfully in reef aquariums as they seem to be uninterested in some of the more noxious soft corals, but this isn’t guaranteed to be a success. Stony corals and sessile invertebrates should be avoided.
Mitratus butterflies don’t appreciate the company of their own kind and other butterflies and will squabble over territory. Tank mates should be of similar size and temperament.
The Mitratus Butterfly is a big commitment and proper research should be done before deciding whether to add this fish to your collection.
