African Train Millipede

Native To: Africa
Size: 5”-13”
Life Span: 5 – 8 years
HOUSING REQUIREMENTS
Environment:
Found throughout subtropical forested regions of Africa, enjoying moderate temperatures and moderate humidity.
Vivarium Size:
The giant African millipede will attain a maximum size of 13.5”, A minimum size enclosure of 12x12x12” will house a single adult. These invertebrates can be kept
communally as long as there is adequate room, hiding places and food. For a pair we would recommend a minimum 24x12x12”.
Substrate:
We recommend a slightly damp substrate of forest floor, mixed soil and sphagnum moss. Not only will this provide a natural look to the vivarium, it will also help to raise the humidity. The ideal humidity for the
majority of millipede species is 50% – 70% Loose substrate such as forest floor will allow the millipede to create burrows and display natural behaviours.
Food and Water:
Millipedes will need a shallow water bowl for drinking, we stress shallow as millipedes are not swimmers and can drown in deep dishes. All millipedes are herbivores so feeding is relatively straightforward. Dependant on the species will define its diet. Some species need rotting wood, some will feed on decomposing leaf litter.
Heat/Light Requirements:
At night it is best to allow the temperature to drop 2-5ºC to mimic the natural nightly temperature drop of the wild and to allow the millipede to become active. Lighting for your millipede can be minimal, from a low
wattage UV coil to a broad spectrum LED.
Below are the ideal temperatures for your millipede:
Day: 22-26°C
Night: 18-22°C
